Derek Hayward joined WSVN Channel 7 as a general assignment reporter in 1991. He began his career in broadcasting in 1976 while working at All News Radio in Detroit on a phone-in talk show. Following his radio work, Derek moved to television, working at WTLV-TV and WJKS-TV in Jacksonville, Florida. Until August, 2013, Derek has covered the news at WSVN. Derek has received numerous awards throughout his career for his work in television news. He was a recipient of the 1988 IRIS International award for a documentary on the Florida justice system. His work on this documentary also garnered him an Emmy award and is on permanent display at the National Museum of Radio and Television in New York. Derek received a second Emmy in 1988 for his work on a series on the Florida water supply and a third Emmy in 1989 for a report on juvenile crime.
