Le Chaâbi naît au début du XXe siècle au coeur de la casbah à Alger, Chaâbi signifie « populaire » en arabe (Chaâbi « peuple »), c'est un des genres musicaux le plus populaire d'Alger, il faut comprendre par populaire comme genre commun ou comme genre par défaut qui constitue le versant "rugueux" de la musique savante issue de la culture arabo-andalouse. C'est Cheikh Nador, qui a su capter et faire fructifier l’héritage du Melhoun, qui devient précurseur du Chaâbi et qui lance El Hadj M'Hamed El Anka maître et créateur du genre. Ce style de musique était d'abord appelé « medh » puis en 1947 il est définitivement baptisé « Chaâbi » par le musicologue Safir El-Boudali. Le Chaâbi mêle les instruments orientaux du classique arabo-andalou à d’autres venus de la musique classique occidentale. On y trouve la derbouka (percussions) et le tambourin, mais aussi le mandole (sorte de grosse mandoline aux sonorités de guitare, munie de quatre cordes doubles en métal).
